My brother lives in Stoney Creek, and his tap water is very high ph (tests 8.3- 8.4) which is the limit of his tester. He's tried pH Down, but the water must have a high KH too, since the pH comes right back up again. He can't afford an RO unit. Any suggestions?

There are a few. Europeans always used rainwater. This was collected in barrels with or without a dirt base...............some carbon filtering before use may be necessary. Another suggestion, if his water has a kH, you may also consider a water softening pillow sold in aquarium stores. ............but if he does quite a few water changes, he may go through a lot of pillows. And a final suggestion would be to filter his water through peat. Filtering through peat can eliminate the collection of carbonate ions from the water as well. Good Luck!................and lets us know what he had succeeded with.
Cheers, Bill
